Merry Christmas 2011 from the Sofia Nomads

Jingle bells… in a new version.
We hope that you will enjoy the taste of sound of Leo, Frank, Nick, Chapolino and (ex) coach Andrea !
Sorry if we couldn’t add everybody, there was only 5 roles in this play !
Merry Christmas Nomads !
A december afternoon at Slavia Stadium

Nomads first 11 a side game for 5 months was played at Slavia stadium on the astroturf pitch and although not in the same class as Sportcenter OrlanDOGsvi where we recently made the final of the illustrious KOED tournament it was still an acceptable alternative hohoho!!
Nomads had most of their best players available with the exception of one of our only world class players Lennart and new Italian midfield dynamo Dario.
It took a little time for the Nomads to adjust to the size of pitch which was only slightly smaller than a medium size village in The Rhodopes and the first half was a bit of a nightmare and may have been much worse had it not been for the heroics of our goalie “Frank The Bavarian Killer”.
Nomads were 4-1 behind at halftime and with three of its squad… Shah their captain… Tommi, who played much too well in goal despite my half time bribe of 3 leva… which i hope he pays back at Leos Xmas Nomads party, and Ardis the silver haired Nomad legend in the other side, Nomads were in for a verbal battering too unless they did something dramatic in the 2nd half.
The Nomads spirit shone through though and man of the match Ivo scored 3 goals and Joro also made the scoresheet.
Final result 5-4 to the other guys who were about half the Nomads average age but were clearly heard gasping for air after being under intense pressure for most of the 2nd half!
It may well have been 5-5 had the linesman not been half women and had no idea that you cant be offside in your own half…..our Evertonian striker Kev was clean through but the flag stayed up and a great comeback was nipped in the testicles! Another ten minutes and we had them… but Nomads can hold their heads up high as most other teams would have given up the ghost!
Big thanks to Schatti “El Presidente” as the pitch and organisation were similar to the German national teams penalty taking….excellent!! Actually it was possibly even better than the KOED tournament and without the nearby toxic wasteplant at Spotscener OrlaDOGskvi!
Faster, stronger…
Dear Nomads,
Because we always want to make you satisfied (especially Ardis), I would like to inform you that the website performances have been optimized for faster loading. It’s maybe a little bit less beautiful, but much more performant.
I made a pingdom test to show you that we are in the average :

Now, regarding mobile devices, I have just installed a light template that will be loaded automatically when you are browsing the website with a mobile device.
It will override all the graphic settings from the full version, hiding the sidebar and many medias and scripts, displaying mainly texts.
Here is a test I made with a slow windows mobile gsm, and it works (I posted some comments and forum topics) :

So now, what can I do more for you ?
A short video for Ardis

To Ardis and anyone stating that the new forum is not user friendly with mobile devices, here is a small video that will show you the opposite.
If you like this kind of tutorials, I can publish them more regularly.
The new website is much more mobile-friendly than the old one, and this is why :
Express yourself

Because we love democracy at the Nomads, every single member can express his thoughts.
Why not to test our voting system with this simple poll ?
You can vote on this page or through the sidebar widget !
Here we go :
Do you like the new Nomads website ?
- Yes, I like it (72%, 21 Votes)
- No, I don’t (21%, 6 Votes)
- Where is the new website ? (joke, but will be counted as “No, I don’t” answer) (7%, 2 Votes)
Total Voters: 29
Nomads looking for reporters / copywriters
Dear Nomads,
You probably enjoyed Nick’s post about the KOEB tournament.
This website belongs to all of us, and its blog too !
So if you feel like writing for the blog, as a reporter, copywriter or any content related to Nomads and football in general, just let me know.
You will be granted an author status, and you will be able to write and publish articles by yourself.
You understand that it is not a paid job, you will need to look somewhere else to pay your karate lessons !
Of course, I will assist you for any technical question.
Up Nomads !
Why did we move to a new website ?
Today I had some time to chat with Drago, as I have been stuck in bed for 3 days. Thanks to Steve Jobs, I can use my Ipad to remain connected and assist every Nomad in signing up to the new website.
So today, Drago started complaining about the new website (after bargaining a shower with Nick – but this will be another topic).
His main question was : why the hell have we moved to a new website ? The previous one was working well.
This question should be asked, because this is a big change.
Here are some answers, in case of some of you are also wondering…
The previous website has been developped with phpbb 2.0, a software from 2006 with the following constraints :
- It is a forum only.
- It is not very user friendly regarding potential updates and additional functionalities : any new function that I needed to add (like the calendar and many others that you can’t think about) had been done manually by coding.
For several years, I have watched different alternatives to make our site better, more opened to new technologies and medias.
And I realized that WordPress was probably the best option, because it offers :
- The same kind of forum, with a very close design.
- A blogging platform where we can publish news, reports and comments.
- A “social network” environment allowing us to share and use our Facebook, Twitter and Google accounts (=reach more potential members. You know that we would need more expats to join us).
Last month, Schatti our new president told me about adding some categories, hall of fame, articles… I guessed this was the right moment to move forward !
WordPress is a very evolutive tool. Every new version is updated smoothly. Our website will remain up to date very easily.
There are thousands of free plugins for any need, because this is the most popular cms tool in the world (1/4 of blogs and content related websites are made with WordPress).
The chat, the blog and the forum are using the same user database : you will find your data and avatar wherever you write.
Another pro : it is a great collaborative tool. If some of you feel like writing articles, like the well-inspired Nick, you can get the author rights and become an official Nomads reporter. All the reports and news won’t get lost in the forum, but they will be published in the blog and homepage.
RSS feeds are provided by WordPress. That means that not only you can follow the website activity from your RSS readers, but every new post will be soon automatically linked from our Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Maybe some of these arguments sound like Chinese to you today. But believe me, it will make sense to you tomorrow.
Uploads : in the same time, we moved to a new hosting provider that allows us unlimited uploading : now you can upload any picture or content to your posts.
Ah, another one : the forum section, and most of the other ones, are mobile friendly : many Nomads were unsuccessfully trying to register from their smartphone. Now, the process should be much easier !
Of course, there could be some inconveniences. There is not a perfect tool that fits all our requirements. But I found that this solution was the best one to improve our user experience, focusing on the social side, as we are a social group afterall.
The doors remain opened to suggestions. The website is brand new and we could easily change to another solution, if you can introduce something better.
When we started the Nomads website in 2006, the idea was to keep in mind that it belongs to all of us. In other words, every Nomad is welcome to share and collaborate on it, if we follow a more constructive way of communicating than “I prefer the previous one” or “I don’t see the interest for myself”.
Now it’s your turn to talk, please use the comment form below :
Nomads at the KOEB Tournament
It was saturday morning in Sofia and there was no game at the Kolodrome Olympic stadium today as all Nomads energies were to be honed into Sofia’s version of The Champions League The KOEB Elite Continental Classic!
Chelsea, Manchester United, Man City, Barcelona, Inter Milan were all eliminated in the earlier rounds and goal-line technology was being used in this tournament for the first time as Seb Twatter was too busy telling black guys to smile and shake hands after being racially abused during matches involving footballers with IQ’s of slightly more than their shirt number.
SportCener Orlandovci was the venue and ten teams from all parts of the continent had prepared meticulously and were primed and ready to go!

Yalta closed early that evening and Toncho had at least 2 hours sleep so was feeling in better shape than most saturday mornings.
The Nomads bus was in for repair so i chose to take a taxi and after half an hour of trying to find the stadium decided the best ploy was to tell the driver he was a complete idiot and gave him 10 leva plus a few chocolate wrappers as his well earned tip.
I wondered how we were so near the stadium and yet there were no crowds gathering….this was a major event WTF! Eventually i was saved……as by pure chance Ardis the silver haired Nomad legend was driving towards me at haste. Get in said Ardis…thank the Kris your here Ardis i was lost….so am i said the great man!
15 minutes later we knew we were close as we saw a cab with Frank our coach fast asleep inside…so we followed it and hoped for the best.
Moments later we were at the arena so we woke Frank and told him to pay his taxi fare…..which was apparantly around 120 leva.
Entering the Theatre Of Dreams ‘Sofia version’ was a truly awesome moment….we were greeted to the sound of Euro pop music and an arena to rival any shoolyard playground in the world…..apparantly 300 pigs had been slaughtered there earlier in the day but there was not even a hint of death or blood!
Most of the guys were already there : Nomads 1 ‘the old and the drunk’ and Nomads 2 ‘The Italian Job’.

The scene was set…we changed into our sparkling new kits and Frank organised a 10 minute warmed up with a couple of rakias and some hot and spicy crisps. Whilst accessing the quality of the opposition and drawing cartoons on the markerboard which wasrought along to help organise tactics and positional play Frank said ok guys who can draw a better Mickey Mouse than that! At this moment i became slightly concerned.

After the first game my fears were alleviated as both Nomads teams won their respective games. For Nomads 1 Lennart and Assen tearing holes in a defence that looked as solid as dogshit in the rain…..Ivo was a lynchpin in midfield and guided his troops to victory.
After the first games we were overjoyed to see another of our main men Toncho arrive boots in hand and possibly not too worse for wear.
After 4 grueling games it appeared and it was also announced that both teams had made the semi finals Nomads 1 on 9 points and Nomads 2 on 7 points….oops hang on said Manfred the organisor this calculator is shisen Nomads 2 were third….this info was shown on the giant scoreboard and was greeted with boos from the hoards of Nomad fans.
Dario had played like a legend in his first Nomad tournament and was completly distraught so decided to have a beer and some crisps!
The semi final for Nomads 1 was a tough one but we now had Toncho plus the lightening skills of Lennart and the cool headed Toncho plus three old twats at the back…..Ivo scored Assen scored and we were through to the biggest final on the football calendar.
Oh i forgot to mention our giant striker Grigor scored two goals on the way to near glory……his shorts were a little tight and i think it may have been his inspiration!
The final was unfortunatley an anti climax but we were in the ascenency once Toncho came on in the 2nd half and could almost have sneaked a draw. We posed for the after tournament fotos then went up to the changing rooms ‘on the way throwing the music system over the balcony onto the referees head’.

Great day for the Nomads and hopefully many more to come……bad end though as Ivo kicked both me and ‘fighting sport’ Frank out of the showers….but oh what fun we had!! Viva La Nomads next time we will take the glorious prize plus hopefully a freshly culled pig!
